Our specialist inpatient services for young people with acute mental health problems offer a comprehensive range of treatments appropriate for addressing a wide range of mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, anger management and family issues. Our open ward environment is suitable for private and informal admissions on a voluntary basis, as well as GP referrals.
The inpatient unit at Cygnet Hospital Godden Green has been designed for young people between the ages of 12-18 years with acute mental health problems. The unit contains 12 en-suite bedrooms and provides a calm, therapeutic and self-contained environment separated from the rest of the hospital. It has its own separate lounge, dining, therapy and educational facilities as well as an outdoor Astroturf sports area.
All clinical staff receive specific training in therapeutic approaches as applied to this age group, in addition to training in child protection. Led by our full-time Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, Dr Maureen Denham, the Multi-Disciplinary Team consists of Registered Nurses, Family Therapists, Psychologists, Teachers, Psychotherapists and experienced Healthcare Assistants.
All treatment programmes provide a structured, consistent approach combining therapeutic interventions, which are proven to benefit adolescents.
Therapy sessions are integrated within an individual timetable for each person, which carefully balances education, physical exercise and relaxation amongst other appropriate activities. The variety of therapies and treatments on offer to adolescents at the unit is comprehensive, and includes individual therapy, family and group therapy, and parent counselling.
The multi-disciplinary team approach within the young persons unit ensures collaborative working with all health professionals involved with the individual; this includes developing close working relationships with schools and colleges where appropriate, so inpatients are able to follow the National Curriculum within the constraints of their illness. For those no longer in full-time education we are able to arrange Vocational or Life-Skills training.
We treat a broad range of mental health problems and will consider both planned and emergency admissions. We offer a pre-admission multi-disciplinary assessment for all planned admissions and encourage all prospective patients to visit the Unit beforehand.
Planning for aftercare begins on admission. The Team will liaise closely with the Young Person's local Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) to ensure an effective Care Plan Approach is in-place prior to discharge. Regular progress reports will be provided to meet the referrer's requirements.
The inpatient unit at Cygnet Hospital Godden Green operates in an open ward setting, and is appropriate for individuals who are not a risk to themselves or others. We therefore welcome admissions on a private or voluntary basis from GP's, families, carers and other health care professionals. Upon referral, we will consider planned and emergency admissions dependant on level of risk. The unit accepts patients informally and those detained under the Mental Health Act (2007).
