Our Addiction Treatment Unit is able to offer a full range of treatments for all addictions and we accept patients from the age of 16 years. Our Young Persons Unit is able to admit from 12 years of age.

The unit itself is an open ward setting, and is appropriate for individuals who are not a risk to themselves or others. We therefore welcome admissions on a private or voluntary basis from GP's, families, carers and other health care professionals. Upon referral, we will consider planned and emergency admissions dependent on level of risk. The unit accepts patients informally and those detained under the Mental Health Act (2007).

To arrange a free assessment or find out more, please phone our Addictions Co-ordinator on 01732 763491 or by email at 121help@cygnethealth.co.uk.

Our Facilities & Staff

Chartwell, our our adult inpatient ward is located at Godden Green in the beautiful, rural setting of the Kentish Weald. Chartwell provides a calm, therapeutic and self-contained environment. Each individual has their own bedroom with en-suite bathroom, plasma TV, wardrobe, desk and personal safe. There's also a communal lounge, ward kitchen, recreation area and extensive gardens.

The Chef offers patients a varied daily menu. Each individual can choose to eat their meals in the dining room, where waiter service is provided, or on the ward.

Individual nursing staff are present 24 hours a day providing care and support, as well as individual interventions when necessary. Patients have contact with their consultant two to three times per week and the ward doctor is available five days a week. Our consultants and doctors are on call 24/7.

The Addictions Treatment Team is comprised of:

Inpatient Detoxification

Before patients can begin our therapy programme they may require an inpatient detox, which we can provide for a range of addictions, including alcohol, cocaine and opiates.

A safe detoxification during physical withdrawal is essential. To ensure adequate nursing and medical provision is on-hand, the patient will be admitted to Chartwell Ward until the risks have reduced.

All patients are under the care of a Consultant Psychiatrist during their admission to Cygnet Hospital Godden Green. Upon admission to the ward a full medical, psychiatric and addictions history will be taken. This process will involve a therapist from the Addiction Treatment Team. Thereafter, the nursing staff will ensure the safety of the patient and begin to orientate them around the unit.

Once the patient is able to give informed consent, the Staff Grade Psychiatrist will perform a physical examination including neuro-observations and an initial Health Care Profile. If a pre-admission assessment was not completed then this will also be done at this time. Based on the initial assessment and physical examination, the detox medication will be prescribed and started on day one of admission.

Throughout the detox period, regular blood pressure, urine screens, pulse and temperature will be recorded. The patient will be on 15 minute nursing observations and further blood tests may be taken. A member of the Addiction Therapy Team will introduce the patient to the Group Therapy Programme and the patient's expectations will be discussed. Together a decision will be made as to when the patient is ready to commence the group programme.

The Therapy Programme

We recognise that families are also affected by the person who has an addiction and our programme is specially designed to include the family in the therapeutic process. We encourage people to gain awareness of and insight into their addiction and recovery.

We hope to encourage the development of hope, trust, acceptance and change. This is conducted in an environment where confidentiality is of the utmost importance. The programme is facilitated by our team of trained professional therapists and counsellors.

In order to provide the tools for patients to be abstinent from mood altering substances, we at Godden Green work with an integrative model of cognitive therapy using the Twelve Step (Minnesota Model) as a base. The programme includes detoxification if needed, group therapy, individual key working, lectures, audio visual aides, written assignments and family involvement.
